Creating Spacious Living Areas for Entertaining Family and Friends

By combining two rooms, such as a living space and kitchen, you can create an inviting atmosphere for entertaining family and friends. Here are two examples of how to create one entertainment area out of two separate spaces :

Combine the living room and outdoor patio to create one space for entertaining.

1. OUTDOOR PATIO & INDOOR LIVING ROOM/DINING ROOM:  This living room and outdoor patio combination makes a perfect place for summer parties or fall festivities. Simply open the beautiful French doors between the two rooms to create one beautiful and spacious entertainment area.

DESIGNER TIP:  We hid the television behind a paneled wall above the fireplace to add more versatility to the living room.

Having the kitchen open into the living room allows for easy conversation between cook and guests

2. KITCHEN & LIVING ROOM: With this open living room and kitchen floor plan, the cook can finish dinner while still being a part of the conversation making it perfect for parties or even preparing family meals.

DESIGNER TIP:  Repeating the colors between the kitchen and family room give the space a feeling of one room.

ASK THE DESIGNER

Welcome to this month’s installment of ASK THE DESIGNER with Cheryl McCracken Interior Design!

This week’s question comes from a reader interested in counter top options for her kitchen:

”We have a modern kitchen with stainless steel appliances and hard wood floors, but have outdated laminate counter tops. We are ready to put in something new like granite, but aren’t sure what all of our options are. Is granite the only way to go? Or are there other options we should consider?”

Great question! I am sure there are many other people out there asking themselves the same thing.

Cesar Stone counter tops and glass tile back splash add a modern design to this kitchen.

Cesar Stone counter tops and glass tile back splash add a modern design to this kitchen.

You have many options with all types of stone choices depending on personal taste.

1. GRANITE. Granite has many different looks from dark granite stone with black spots to lighter colors with reds and golds. Some granite stones are even solid color. I would suggest looking at different pieces of granite before making your final decision.

2. CESAR STONE. For a more contemporary look, I suggest Cesar Stone.  Cesar Stone is a man made product which is very durable and is solid in color.

3. CONCRETE. Another option for a contemporary look is concrete counter tops. Concrete counter tops are made from a custom mold of your kitchen layout and are extremely durable.

Any of these choices will make an incredible addition to your kitchen. It just depends on the type of look you desire.  I encourage you to go and look at a few of these products before making a final decision. Good luck!

Designers Note: Keep in mind when changing the counter tops the back splash could be involved as well depending on the way the counters where attached. I would suggest beautiful glass tiles that would really give a punch to your kitchen.

Fabric Choice Completes the Look of a Room

You have painted the walls a perfect color, chosen an outstanding rug and decided on terrific furniture. But, there is still a certain “something” missing in the room.

Your room needs depth. And depth comes with fabric choice. From bedding to curtains to pillows, fabric gives a room warmth and a sense of completion.

Here are a few examples of how CHERYL MCCRACKEN INTERIORS has chosen fabrics that add that finishing touch to a few of our clients’ spaces:

The inspiration for this small den came from the chair you see on the right. We decided on a Duralee silk plaid fabric for the curtains and added Philip Jefferies grass cloth wallpaper with an off white sofa to keep the room light and airy but still cozy.

By using the oriental rug our client already had as the cornerstone for this room, we were able to add a Vervain Drapery fabric for window coverings and a blue Duralee fabric to go on the Drexel Dining room chairs. We matched the chairs to the walls by painting a faux stripe.

This young client had her heart set on pink and black. We started with pink walls and black accent paint on the white window seat.We wanted to really make the window seat the focal point of this room. So, we added black polka dot and pink check Pindler Fabrics on the windows and black ,pink and white stripe Norbar Fabric accent pillows along the window. We think this turned out to be an adorable space!

It is easy to see where inspiration came from in this young man’s room! New England Patriots colors no less!! We added Duralee fabric in Patriot colors for window treatments and a bold comforter on the bed to complete this look. He now has the perfect place to watch Sunday Night Football!

ASK THE DESIGNER

Welcome to the first installment of ASK THE DESIGNER!

This month’s question is from a reader who has a problem with her daughter’s bedroom:

Hi Cheryl-

My daughter’s room is very small, but has high ceilings (10ft vaulted ceiling). Her twin size bed takes up a third of her room! She has very little space for toys and her dresser. Any suggestions on ways to make her room “roomier”? Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks for the question! Here are a few ways to help:

Add space to smaller rooms with the use of bookshelves as a head board.

Add space to smaller bedrooms with underbed storage.

Add space to smaller bedrooms with underbed storage.

There are many choices of bed frames that have storage for all ages. Such as a bed frame that has a bookcase/ shelf for a headboard and 2 drawers under the bed which would give her a place for books ,toys extra clothes etc. They come in many styles and colors.

Another option would be to have some custom built-ins made to accommodate all your storage needs. Having high ceilings will definitely be an advantage!

You could also paint the ceiling and walls all the same color (preferable a lighter color) which would make the room appear larger as well.

Hope this helps and good luck!

The Art of Hanging Art

Adding artwork over a sofa can add dimension to a room.

Adding artwork over a sofa can add dimension to a room.

Artwork adds the finishing touch to any space. Here are a few tips on choosing the right pieces for your space:

  • When choosing art for your space try to choose a piece that has colors that work with your room or go with a black and white theme or different shape mirrors.

  •  Generally, choose smaller pieces for narrow walls such as hallways and larger pieces or a combination of smaller pieces for bigger walls.

  • When hanging artwork over furniture do not choose art that is wider than the  piece.

  • Mirrors when hung opposite a window can add more natural light to a room or reflect the scenery outside or even make a small room appear larger.

DESIGNER TIP: Avoid unwanted nail holes in your walls by laying your pieces on the floor to arrange first,in the same square footage as the wall space you are hanging in.If your landlord won’t allow nails in the walls 3m makes a product for hanging that is strong and won’t mark your wall.

BEFORE and AFTER: Living Room Transformation

We converted this small condo into an amazing and spacious living and dining area.

With the purchase of the second condo next door, we were able to knock out the wall between the two smaller condos, creating a large dining area and living room that includes a fireplace in each room and double balconies that overlook Boston Harbor.

Finishing touches include exposed columns, wide plank floors and textured walls to complete the transformation!

Click on the pictures below to see this amazing transformation from ordinary to extraordinary!
